Career Advice » Resume: Education history

How to describe your education

Typically the Education section is placed immediately after your Professional Experience. However, if it is favourable to describe your education first, do so!

For example fresh graduates with no or very little professional experience should list their educational history before their employment history because education is their main asset! After a couple of years of work, your education becomes less important and you should list your professional experience first.

List your degrees starting from the highest one. State:

  • Degree level/title
  • School, College
  • Year of completion

MBA, State University of New York at New Paltz 2008

BA, Tudor College, Arizona State University2006

Completed professional development programs and workshops on Communication, Negotiation, Business Management, Project Management, and Information Systems Technology.

Mary also states her professional education because she believes that it is important. With no College degree:

  • If you have not attended College, state your High School diploma.
  • If you have attended College and didn’t graduate, list the College first (indicating no completion) followed by your High School diploma.

Statistics show that employees that did not completed their degree have better career paths than employees who did not attend a College.
